The fact that mercantilism generally leads to undesirable outcomes is indeed one of the few positions to which economists have come to a consensus.

What sort of policy solutions do you think exist to reduce the gap between the incentives faced by politicians and the social good? I'm curious as to whether or not a body of voters who are better informed about the dangers of mercantilism could deter politicians from needlessly imposing tariffs.
